Best Engagement Photo Locations in Montreal

Engagement photos are the most romantic when they feel like you. I love to take photos of two people who live in this city, who have a favourite coffee shop, a market they wander on Sunday mornings, a neighbourhood that feels like home. Montreal is extraordinary for this, because it's one of the most visually diverse cities in Canada.

So instead of telling you to go stand in front of Basilica Notre Dame (you can, it's beautiful, everyone does it), here's a guide to my top 10 engagement photo locations in Montreal — from the iconic to the unexpected.

The Plateau — Donut Shop and a Walk

This is one that will produce the photos you want to print and hang on your wall. The Plateau's staircases, painted brick, corner depanneurs, and neighbourhood energy are so Montreal. Add a donut shop stop and you have the perfect structure for a session: something to do together (order, argue about which donut), and then a full walk through one of the most photogenic neighbourhoods in the country. The Plateau rewards wandering. The photos feel like a Sunday morning rather than a photoshoot.

Parc Mont Royal

I love the mountain in the centre of the city. It’s easily accessible, and you can get skyline views, privacy and a focus on nature in one place. Montreal's mountain is the most versatile location on this list. It’s beautiful for every season, at every time of day, and for every kind of couple. Dappled forest light on the wooded trails, open sky at Beaver Lake, and the city visible in the distance. If you're not sure where to start, but know you love nature, views and calmness, start here.

Old Port

The Old Port is the obvious choice, for good reason! Cobblestone streets, stone buildings, and the St. Lawrence river are all reminiscent of Europe. It photographs beautifully, is romantic, and feels rooted in Montreal's history. If you feel like your engagement session simply must be a formal affair, where you can put on that dress you never get to wear and people stop in their tracks when they see the photos on your wall, the Old Port is for you!

St. Joseph's Oratory

Pictured here on a freezing Christmas Eve morning, showcasing that it can look good no matter the season or weather, St. Joseph’s Oratory is of the most underused engagement photo locations in the city. The exterior of the Oratory with its massive dome, stone steps and elevation on the Westmount hillside gives grandeur. It’s a portrait backdrop that has no equivalent in the city. There's a formality to the architecture that creates a beautiful tension when paired with a relaxed, candid couple who clearly couldn't care less about being formal.

Marché Jean-Talon

Marché Jean-Talon is an ideal location if times you’re happiest with your partner are shopping for fresh veggies, creating culinary masterpieces in the kitchen, or hunting for snacks. The colours in the flower stalls are so bright and beautiful. Add two people who are genuinely excited to be there together and you have a session that feels alive and specific and joyful in a way that a park session sometimes can't match. Come during peak season (late summer and fall when the market is at its most abundant) and the whole place looks like a movie.

Théâtre Rialto

A national historic site on Avenue du Parc, the Rialto was built in 1924 with a Beaux-Arts façade inspired by the Paris Opéra and a neo-Baroque interior featuring gilded mouldings, painted silk panels, and an illuminated stained-glass dome. It’s possible to book tickets to a show and do an engagement session at the same time! For couples who love music and cinematic vibes, this venue is for you.

Cinéma du Parc

For the cinephiles. Cinéma du Parc has been a Montreal institution since the 1960s — an independent art house cinema tucked into the underground level of a building near McGill, with vintage film posters, warm projection-booth lighting, and that atmosphere of a place that genuinely loves movies. If films are part of your relationship — you have a running list of favourites, you quote things at each other, your first or second date involved a cinema — this location makes the engagement photos feel like a chapter in your actual story rather than a generic portrait session.

Botanical Gardens

The Montreal Botanical Gardens are 190 acres of photographic possibility across multiple distinct garden environments with the Japanese Garden, the Chinese Garden, the rose garden, and the greenhouse corridors. For couples who get excited when different flowers come into bloom, bird watch, and want lush, green, garden-editorial photos without leaving the city, the Botanical Gardens in late spring through early fall are beautiful. Evenings with soft light are the best time to go.

Orange Julep

The Orange Julep is absolutely non-negotiable if you're a Montreal couple who appreciates the specific joy of a giant orange-shaped restaurant on Décarie. The Big Orange is one of those locations that's so distinctly Montreal that the photos become immediately recognizable as belonging to this city. The retro exterior is fun, bold, a little absurd, and it produces engagement photos that nobody else has. Ideal for couples who don't take themselves too seriously and want at least one set of photos that makes people laugh when they see them. Come at dusk for the best light and the neon.

The Montreal Metro

The Montreal metro is one of the most architecturally distinctive subway systems in the world, and almost nobody thinks to use it for engagement photos. Each station was designed by a different architect in the 1960s and 70s, creating a network of completely unique spaces. The visual payoff of this everyday romance setting is unlike anything else in the city. For couples who love the urban and the unexpected, a metro session is the move.

There are so many possibilities for an engagement photography session in Montreal. These are some of the most visually striking places I’ve photographed couples at, and each one meant something special to them. Locations are an important part of creating a comfortable and romantic vibe, and I’m here to help you choose one for your engagement!

If you want help planning a session around the locations that fit your relationship best and you love a cinematic style, I’d love to be your photographer.
